New and Improved Packsaddles
For many years, outfitters and hunters packed with the old style sawbucks and Deckers, which worked well with slim and narrow backed horses. Today's horses are much wider backed, larger and heavier, and the old style packsaddles do not fit as well as they should. In a lot of cases, they end up soring the backs of these horses.
After five years of designing, GR Saddles has manufactured a set of kidney boards that are the same as a riding saddle, and can be adjusted to fit these larger, wide backed horses. Many hunters and outfitters are now using these saddles and very happy with the results.
Many outfitters leave their truck and trailers and pack in for two to three days, traveling 8 to 10 hours a day to get to their base camp. In the past they were trailing five or six extra horses to use on the second and third day because the first pack string would be too sore. Using this new packsaddle, a 10 minute adjustment will change the saddle to fit any horse you have with you.
We all know that every horse has its’ day, and wrecks do happen, so every part of the saddle can be replaced if broken. GR Saddles stock all the individual parts that may be needed. On the semi- and full-skirted saddle, the leather is blocked on the kidney boards just like a riding saddle. They are form-fitted and fleeced and real sheep fleece is also available.
